Stronger, Smarter, More Versatile Fire Station Storage
Fire stations are constantly evolving. Operational requirements change. Equipment inventories grow. PPE standards develop. Stations are refurbished, relocated or rebuilt. What works now may look very different in five, ten or twenty years’ time.
Yet when it comes to equipment storage, many solutions are designed around a fixed snapshot in time. They meet an immediate requirement but offer little flexibility when circumstances inevitably change, leading to unnecessary disruption and replacement costs.
For estates teams responsible for managing fire service facilities and budgets, this creates a challenge. How do you create a storage system that can evolve alongside the station itself?

Designed Around Change
This is a problem that GearGrid, a manufacturer of purpose-built storage solutions for fire stations, has been working on since 1997. Over the last three decades, the company has developed a storage system designed around versatility, durability and long-term value.
At the heart of the system is an open-wire design featuring a standardised 76.2mm x 76.2mm grid, which supports a range of more than 20 accessories, hooks and hangers. These accessories attach directly to the grid and can be repositioned as needs change over time.
The system’s versatility doesn’t stop there.
Unlike many heavy-duty storage products, which are often welded into fixed formats, GearGrid lockers are assembled using modular panels, tubes, bases and extension components. This means systems can be expanded, reduced, reconfigured or relocated without needing to replace many, if any, existing parts.
When planning for future growth or station refurbishment programmes, this flexibility provides a significant long-term advantage.
One System. Multiple Applications

While many services first encounter GearGrid through its PPE lockers, the system has expanded significantly over the years. Today, GearGrid is used to store BA sets, cylinders, hoses, extrication equipment, drysuits, kit bags, training equipment, and more.
Because every product is built around the same grid system and shared design principles, services can create a consistent storage system across multiple areas of the station while retaining the ability to adapt layouts as requirements change.
An Example of Long-Term Value
The true value of a modular system becomes clear when major changes occur.
One of the best examples comes from Edinburgh Airport Fire Service.
More than twelve years ago, GearGrid lockers were installed within the airport’s existing fire station.
When plans were approved for a brand-new fire station in 2020, the existing storage system wasn’t replaced. Instead, all 62 lockers were dismantled and relocated to temporary Portakabin accommodation while construction work took place. Using the same core components, the lockers were reconfigured to suit the temporary layout.
Once the new fire station was completed, the lockers were dismantled for a second time and relocated into their permanent home. The system was then reconfigured again to suit the new locker room layout and expanded from 62 to 68 lockers using additional components only where required.
This demonstrates the difference between purchasing a product and investing in a system.
Built to Last
Flexibility is only valuable if the product itself can withstand years of operational use, which is why GearGrid is designed and manufactured to meet the demanding requirements of emergency service environments.
Products are made from heavy-duty steel tubing and durable steel wire, which is finished with a TGIC powder coat.
Core products are manufactured at GearGrid’s facility in Forest Lake, Minnesota, drawing on more than a century of manufacturing expertise. Additional UK-specific products and components are also manufactured within the United Kingdom.
To provide additional reassurance, GearGrid systems are supplied with a 5-year fair-use warranty when installed by authorised installers.
Those installation teams bring more than 18 years of experience delivering GearGrid projects across the UK and Europe.

Supporting Modern Decontamination Practices
Modern fire stations place increasing emphasis on contamination control and decontamination procedures, making material selection more important than ever.
GearGrid’s powder-coated finish is applied in-house and provides a durable, non-porous surface that is easy to clean and maintain. Unlike materials such as wood, which can absorb contaminants, moisture and odours, the powder-coated steel surface can simply be wiped clean as part of routine cleaning procedures.
This helps support cleaner equipment storage areas while maintaining the professional appearance of the installation throughout its service life.

Looking Beyond Initial Cost
When evaluating storage systems, it is easy to focus solely on initial purchase price.
However, when you consider how long these facilities are going to be around, long-term value often tells a very different story.
A lower-cost product may appear attractive initially, but if it’s manufactured to a lower spec and cannot be expanded, relocated or adapted, repair and replacement costs can quickly outweigh any upfront savings.
By contrast, GearGrid systems are designed around longevity and adaptability.
● Components can be reused.
● Layouts can be modified.
● Accessories can be repositioned.
● Systems can move with the station.
The ability to reuse and reconfigure existing components also supports sustainability objectives by reducing waste and extending the life of the product.
The result is a storage solution that continues delivering value long after installation.
Investing in the Future
For almost 30 years, GearGrid has helped fire and rescue services create storage solutions that are smarter, stronger, and more versatile, and they continue to work closely with fire and rescue services to develop new products.
