NFCC National Fire Estates Group National Property Conference
What if every fire and rescue service had the same funding to invest in training facilities? Would we all make the same decisions?
The NFCC National Property Conference brought together fire and rescue professionals from across the UK to discuss one of the most important enablers of operational effectiveness: fire and rescue estates.
I had the privilege of opening the NFCC National Fire Estates Group National Property Conference at Kelvedon Park, hosted by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.
The conference provided an opportunity for colleagues to discuss how fire stations, training facilities and operational buildings can support the changing needs of modern fire and rescue services.

NFCC National Property Conference Focuses on Fire Estates
Fire stations, training facilities and operational buildings are far more than infrastructure. They influence operational readiness, training quality, firefighter wellbeing and public confidence.
As a sector, we are investing millions of pounds in estate improvements and training facilities. The question I posed at the NFCC National Property Conference was simple:
Are we building individual facilities, or are we building a national system?
With discussions continuing around the future College of Fire and Rescue, the decisions we make today on design, location, capacity and standards will shape what is possible tomorrow.
We have a real opportunity to ensure that the investments being made today support a more connected and collaborative national approach in the future.
Investment in Fire and Rescue Training Facilities
Alongside investment, the conference also explored how the sector can work more consistently in areas such as estate standards, condition assessment and suitability.
A more consistent approach can help ensure that public money is used effectively while delivering facilities that support operational excellence.
The fire and rescue service has a proud heritage, but we must also be forward-looking. Our estates need to be safe, sustainable, affordable and capable of supporting the changing risks and expectations placed upon modern fire and rescue services.
The NFCC National Property Conference highlighted the importance of collaboration, shared knowledge and long-term planning when considering the future of fire and rescue estates.
Thank you to everyone who attended, contributed and challenged thinking throughout the day. The real value of events like this is not the presentations—it is the collective expertise in the room and the actions that follow.
